In this article, I am briefly going to show you how to get or register your BVN in Nigeria.

The BVN, which is an acronym for Bank Verification Number was introduced by the Nigerian Interbank Settlement Method (NIBSS) in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria as a biometric identification system with the aim of curbing unlawful financial activities or transactions.

As a matter of fact, the Federal government has been mandated by an interim court and given the order to seize funds in bank accounts that has no Bank Verification Number (BVN) also known as incomplete Know Your Customer (KYC) details.

For customers who have no BVN, the government will most likely give a window for them to reclaim their funds by enrolling for a BVN 9Bank Verification Number).

Basic steps to follow and get or register your BVN In Nigeria.

  • Visit any of the commercial banks in Nigeria with a valid ID card to obtain and fill out a BVN enrollment form.
  • After doing so, your biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) is going to be captured.
  • After the capturing, you will be given a ticket ID.
  • Now go and wait for a few days and your BVN will then be sent to your phone number.

Nigerians who are based abroad can register for BVN at any of the enrollment centers which are located in the United States of America, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, China, France, Canada, India, Brazil, and Italy.

Please note that you will be expected to provide your International Passport as a valid ID.

What happens if you forget your BVN? 

If you forget your BVN, you can retrieve it by dialing *5650# on the mobile phone you used in registering the BVN. Note that a service fee of 10 or 20 Naira will be charged from your airtime.

According to statistics, about 20 million bank accounts have so far been registered for BVN.
